When you are on the road, for work or pleasure, do you take the time to exercise? It isn’t always easy to find the time, and we don’t usually feel like exercising when we are away from home. The problem with travel is, we don’t take the time to exercise, and we also eat more junk food and high calorie – high fat restaurant foods. This is when exercise should be top priority! Don’t forget to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day and more if it’s hot or you’re exercising. Drinking water can help you lose weight!
Usually when you travel, exercise drops to the bottom of the priority list. A lot of us have to travel for work and a few lucky people travel a lot for pleasure. Whichever group you belong to, here are a few easy and convenient ideas to keep you exercising on the road!
I know you like to pack as light as possible, so adding running shoes and a workout outfit may not be convenient.
Chances are, you will be happy you did bring your workout gear! Sometimes that’s all the motivation you need – I may as well go workout since I brought my shoes and shorts! Also, they make such lightweight and compact shoes and workout clothes now, that it’s not a really valid excuse. Don’t forget your gym clothes!
Check if the hotel you are staying at has a gym
You can probably do the same type of workout that you do at home. If possible, do some research first and find out before you book if the hotel has a decent gym facility. If not, look somewhere else.
If you are staying somewhere that does not have a gym, go for a hike or run. Walking at a brisk pace is also great. Some hotels rent bicycles, or know where to send you to rent one. This not only provides exercise, but helps you get in some sight seeing as well. You may also bring resistance bands in your luggage; they take up next to no room and you can do a whole body workout without weights in your hotel room.
What if you are so busy, that every minute is scheduled?
Wake up early! Get in at least 20-30 minutes of exercise before you shower in the morning. If you are a night owl, do it at night. This will get your blood pumping, your mind cleared and you will have an energy boost to carry you through the day!
No gym? No problem, use your hotel room
Do the plank for a minute, 15 push-ups, 15 lunges on each leg, 15 squats, 15 tricep dips, 5 minutes of jumping jacks or high energy dancing. Do this 3 times and you’ll have gotten your heart rate up, burned some calories and you’ll be ready to tackle the day ahead!
Sorry to blow all your excuses for missing your workouts on the road. Pack your lightweight workout clothes and shoes. Check ahead to see if your hotel has a gym facility. No gym where you are? Get out and run, hike or rent a bike. Or just use resistance bands in your room. It’s easy and fast to do 3 sets of jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups, squats, lunges and plank. I’m proud of you for taking the time to take care of yourself when you are out of town!
